What is the history and popularity of the app?

PBWorks was initially launched as PBWiki in June 2005 and kept that name until it decided to re-brand itself as PBWorks in April 2009. The company is based in California, USA and has received a total of $2.45 million in funding from various sources.

PBWorks claims to be the most popular shared workspace utility on the internet. They currently host over 800,000 sites and have some very well known customers. Their customers include around half of the fortune 500 companies.

What are the differences to other apps?

There are a number of other applications which are very similar to PBWorks; the only difference with this one is that it is so popular. It offers excellent file sharing capabilities and collaborative utilities which make it really easy to work together. It basically works the same as any other wiki site where multiple people can all interact and adjust the same page. All of the changes are recorded so that you can easily find out who changed what and when. Unlike other wiki applications this one also includes built in security.

You will also need an email address to register and they will check this by sending you a confirmation email.

The basic account is completely free and although it is the most limited account is suitable for personal use. Paid accounts including the standard and project accounts offer more features including backups and security. The paid accounts start at $8 per month and include unlimited storage, networking, and a single workspace. All of the paid accounts have the option of free 30 day trials which can be used to make you see whether this software is any good for you.

Who would you recommend the application to?

PBWorks is a very reliable application which is suitable for anyone who wants to work together with other people. There are lots of people using the system, including schools and lawyers. It’s very flexible and can be used by almost anyone. The free accounts are suitable for personal use although they may not provide enough features for professional users who would be better off with the paid accounts.
